The Department of International Economic Relations and Economic Diplomacy of the Faculty of International Relations began its profile in the mid 90ies of the 20th century at the Faculty of Commerce of the University of Economics in Bratislava.
After founding the Faculty of International Relations of the University of Economics in Bratislava in 2000 it was its first department. In regard to the focus of the Faculty on International Economic Relations and Diplomacy it is the core department of the Faculty.
The first head of the department was Prof. JUDr. Louis Tóth, CSc. In the past, besides prof. JUDr. Louis Tóth, CSc. many significant experts from the field, such as prof. Ing. Jaroslav Filip, CSc. and JUDr. Peter Rusiňák, PhD., who formed the profile of the department as personalities, worked here. Until August 31, 2022, the department was headed by Dr. h. c. prof. Dipl. Ing. Ľudmila Lipková, CSc. The current Head of the Department is Assoc. Prof. Dipl. Ing. Martin Grešš, PhD.
The pedagogical and scientific activities of the Department goes in line with accredited study fields at Bachelor's degree (International Economic Relations), Master studies (International Economic Relations and Economic Diplomacy (at doctoral degree International Economic Relations).
The pedagogical activity of the Department is focused on the bachelor's degree in teaching the discipline “World economy”. For the students of the Faculty, teachers of the department teach subjects such as Diplomatic protocol, International Economic Relations, International Economic relations theory, European Union, International funding, Project management of the European Union at the Bachelor´s degree.
As part of the Master study, the teachers of the Department teach subjects focused on the issue of the economy of developing countries, the regional aspect of the world economy, economic policies of the European Union, the economies of the European Union, the diplomatic protocol, negotiations in diplomacy and others.
Many of the mandatory subjects are, in accordance with the accreditation, taught in one of the world's languages – in English or Russian. Selected optional subjects can also be studied in the German language.
Each year the teachers of the Department supervise dozens of bachelor and master theses in the field of international economic relations and economic diplomacy. During the existence of the Department, hundreds of students have completed their studies here. At the department, dozens of students completed their doctoral studies in internal or external form of study not only from the Slovak Republic, but also from abroad.
The scientific research and publication activities of the Department's pedagogical staff are focused on the issue of the world economy, international economic relations and the European Union.
The teachers of the Department are currently involved in projects within the framework of VEGA, international projects and applied research projects of scientific research activities.
The results of the scientific and research work of teachers and doctoral students are published in hundreds of scientific articles in national and foreign journals, many of which are registered in the Web of Science or Scopus databases, in dozens of volumes from national and international scientific conferences, from which many are also registered in the Web of Science database. The staff of the Department have prepared dozens of textbooks and study texts for students.
There is also an intense involvement at foreign institutes of teachers of the department. The Department develops relations with many foreign universities, which are carried out in the form of lectures of foreign colleagues for the students of the Faculty and also, the lecturing activities of teachers at foreign universities. This cooperation is also carried out in the field of scientific research and publishing activities.
